Wix vs WordPress for Small Business Websites: Which Should You Choose?

Wix vs WordPress for Small Business Websites: Which Should You Choose?

Wix vs WordPress is not a morality contest. It is a fit question: who will edit the site, how much SEO and content you need, and whether you are willing to own hosting and updates.

WebSolNet builds on WordPress for most service businesses, and we migrate owners off Wix when they have outgrown it. We will not pretend Wix is “not a real website.” For a one-location brochure with a form, Wix can be enough. The pain starts when you need structure, cleaner long-term SEO control, or a developer who is not locked to Wix’s editor.

If your real question is Squarespace, read Squarespace vs WordPress. For GoDaddy’s builder: GoDaddy vs WordPress.

The short version

  • Choose Wix if you want to DIY this weekend, you have a handful of pages, and you are fine renting the platform.
  • Choose WordPress.org (self-hosted) if you want a site a developer can rebuild, you expect to add service pages and a blog, or you already know you will hire help.
  • Do not confuse WordPress.com with WordPress.org. WordPress.com is hosted for you, with plan limits. WordPress.org is the software you put on your own host — that is what most agencies mean by “WordPress.”

If your real question is WordPress vs Shopify vs Webflow, use the platform decision guide instead. Shopify wins when you sell products with checkout. Wix vs WordPress is for marketing and service sites.

Editing and day-to-day ownership

Wix’s editor is the reason people pick it. Drag, drop, publish. For a restaurant menu or a simple contractor page, that feels like winning.

WordPress with a page builder (Elementor is common) can feel similar — until the site is a pile of sections nobody named. A clean WordPress build uses a simple set of templates: homepage, service, about, contact. Your staff edits text and photos, not 40 nested containers. That is the goal of solid web design.

Ask one question: *If the original designer disappeared, could someone else take over?* Wix sites are portable in theory and messy in practice. WordPress exports, migrations, and new developers are a normal industry path. That is why we can take over WordPress work; taking over a heavily customized Wix site is often a rebuild.

SEO and content (including Wix SEO limitations)

Both platforms can rank. Google does not award extra points for the CMS logo.

Where WordPress still wins for growing small businesses:

  • You can add service pages and city pages without fighting a rigid site structure. See service area pages if you cover more than one town.
  • SEO plugins give you titles, canonicals, schema, and redirects in one place. You still have to write the pages.
  • A blog that you actually publish is easier to keep on WordPress than as an afterthought.
  • Migrations, staging, and developer handoffs are routine in the WordPress ecosystem.

Wix has improved SEO tools. Real Wix SEO limitations for growing service firms are usually architectural: scaling unique service/city pages, owning redirects during redesigns, and avoiding app stacks that slow the site. The limiter is often the site architecture and the owner’s time — not a secret Wix penalty. If the Wix site has thin pages and a buried phone number, WordPress will not save it until the content is fixed.

Cost: subscription vs hosting plus people

Wix looks cheaper because hosting is inside the plan. WordPress looks cheaper until you add a host, backups, and updates. Be honest about both:

  • Wix: yearly Premium plan + domain + any paid apps. Predictable until you hit a plan ceiling or need a feature that requires a higher tier.
  • WordPress: hosting (see what actually matters in WP hosting) + domain + optional premium plugins + someone to update core and plugins. Our small business website cost guide puts the build in ranges. Public packages start at Launch $800 — see pricing. Maintenance is separate — and it is the part DIY WordPress owners skip until the site is hacked or slow.

The expensive outcome is building twice: a Wix site you outgrow in 18 months, then a WordPress rebuild. If you already know you will want a blog, hiring pages, or a developer next year, start on WordPress.

Speed, apps, and “can my cousin fix it?”

Wix performance is mostly Wix’s problem (good) and your image sizes (still your problem). WordPress performance is hosting + theme + plugin pile. That is why we wrote WordPress speed tips that keep the design intact and which plugins small sites actually need.

The cousin test matters. A local “I can do Wix” freelancer may be gone in six months. WordPress has a large pool of developers — including white-label partners if you are an agency (agency collaboration).

When to stay on Wix

Stay if the site is converting, you can edit it, search is not a growth channel yet, and you are not fighting the editor every week. A rebuild for ideology is a waste of money. Compare that decision with redesign vs refresh.

When to leave Wix for WordPress

Move if you need more pages than the template wants, you want a proper content workflow, you are hiring an agency that lives in WordPress, or Wix apps are running the business instead of the other way around.

Migration is not an export button. URLs, redirects, forms, and Google Business Profile links all have to land on the new host. Follow migrate to WordPress without losing SEO and the SEO checklist before a redesign.

Decision checklist

Signal Lean Wix Lean WordPress
DIY this month Yes Only if you already know WP

Product checkout is core Consider Shopify instead Consider Shopify instead
Site converting and calm Stay No rush

FAQ

Is WordPress free?

The software is free. Hosting, the domain, and labor are not. “Free WordPress.com” is a different product with limits.

Will I lose Google rankings if I leave Wix?

You can keep them if you map every useful Wix URL to a new WordPress URL with 301 redirects, keep the content, and recrawl in Search Console. You will lose them if you launch a new domain with no redirects “for a fresh start.”

Can Wix work for local SEO?

Yes, if the pages are specific and GBP matches the site. WordPress does not magically win the map pack. Local SEO is profile + pages + reviews. Start with the local SEO checklist.

Is Wix or WordPress better for beginners?

Wix is easier for true DIY beginners. WordPress is better when you expect growth or professional help. Beginner-friendly and long-term-fit are different questions.

Can I keep my domain when I migrate?

Yes. Point DNS to the new host after redirects are ready. Plan email carefully so mail does not break.

Should I migrate if Wix is already ranking?

Only with a redirect map and a content plan. Rankings are an asset — treat migration as a project, not a weekend experiment.
